A letter to his publishers. Reports that he has completed his part of the book, but that Mr. Clark, the ghostwriter, is ill. Discusses some details he wishes to include in the present book and declares his intention, against the firm's objections, to write a life of Martin Van Buren. Closes with news of a duel between Rep. Henry Wise of Virginia and his predecessor Richard Coke.
